The goal for these lessons is to connect learners to their natural resources in timely, relevant ways. Basic tenets of educating for sustainability theory accomplish this through a focus on several key themes:
- Stewardship & Individual Ability to Affect Change
- Systems, Cycles, and Interdependence
- Importance of Place and Healthy Commons
- Limits and Long-term Effects
These themes, amongst others, become especially relevant when teaching about the topic of solid waste as we investigate product life cycles, individual and ethical choices reagarding disposal, and eventually where “away” is and where we dispose of trash.
