This activity challenges students to separate materials in a similar way to how it happens in real life.

Recycling is a service offered in our communities and is a familiar practice to most students in their homes and schools. Most of us now have single-stream recycling which means that we put all of our recycling into one container for pickup. What happens to it when it leaves our home or school?

We have several facilities in the St. Louis area where recycling is sorted. The sorted materials are baled and sold to companies that use it as raw material to make new products. Recycling is a great way to reduce the human impacts we make on the environment.

This relay can be run several times during a class period allowing for multiple classrooms to participate. A gym or other large indoor space is required.
